Holwerd, Netherlands

Sustainable energy for households in the Netherlands

The Holwerd waste-to-value plant is our first biogas plant in the Netherlands, founded in 2018. It’s designed to create sustainable biomethane, which is being introduced into the national grid for households’ energy consumption in the Netherlands.

Specifics

The biogas used to create biomethane, is made from a mixture of livestock manures and other co-products. Via an anaerobic digestion process, we upgrade the biogas to biomethane. The degistate is separated into thin liquid and solid digestate fractions by means of a decanter. Both fractions are further processed and re-utilized as fertilizer.

  • We have produced 3,200,000 m3 of biogas of which 13.500 MWh were injected into the Dutch gas grid providing gas to 1650 households.
  • Since the upgrade, the installed capacity is 2.5MW.
  • We have processed 32,000 tonnes of feedstock (mix of co-products and manure).
  • Liquids are stored on-site and used for fertilizer on local farming lands.
  • Solids undergo further treatment offsite where it is dried and reused as fertiliser.

Wijster, Netherlands

The largest anaerobic digestion plant in Europe to process 100% poultry manure

The Wijster waste-to-value plant in the Netherlands is designed to produce methane-rich biogas from the biological conversion of poultry manure. We process 136.500 tons of poultry manure a year. The manure is received from broiler and egg-laying farms across the Netherlands. This project is another building block in our journey to create value from waste and to do our part in helping create a sustainable greener future.

Specifics

The biogas will be utilised to produce 3.0 MW of electricity and 3.1 MW of thermal energy. 27.0 MW of biomethane will be produced for injection into the local gas network. After the digestion process, the digestate will be stripped of nitrogen to produce a liquid fertiliser stream. All solid digestate will be dried and pelletised for sales globally.

  • First gas to grid May 2022 – fully operational since October 2022.
  • 36,8 million m3 of biogas, of which 235.000 MWh is injected into the Dutch gas grid. And has the capacity to export 26.000 MWh of electrical energy.
  • During the process, the plant produces <-70 gCO2/MJ carbon-negative biomethane.
  • High-quality fertilizers and ammonium sulphate from the by-products to enhance the closed-loop process.
